One of the major setbacks in Nigeria poultry farming sphere is the lack of knowledge of the business.

A careful study has revealed that over 70% of middle-scale poultry farmers in Nigeria lacks knowledge of the business. These farmers come into the industry with the get-rich-quick mindset, not treating the poultry adventure as a real-time business venture. Unfortunately, they don’t make it far in the businesses, and their negative testimonies seem to scare many intending farmers off the business.

While that’s the current situation faced with the poultry farming industry, a few of the farmers who are business minded still makes a lot of difference irrespective.

If you’re an intending poultry farmer in Nigeria, you don’t need to be scared off this beautiful adventure by the  negative comments from those who never followed the rules of the business.

Are you intending to start a poultry farming business in Nigeria, but you’re afraid due to the negative comments you read on media?

You don’t need to be scared. Remember, no one will ever tell you what they did wrong to reward themselves they failure they experienced. It is always someone else’s fault. They’ll always find something or someone to blame it on to make themselves feel they did all that was right.

To get started as a poultry farmer in Nigeria, you need 3 things:

• Finance

• Knowledge of the business

• Passion

FINANCE

Like every other business, money is the bedrock of a poultry venture.

Currently, poultry business in Nigeria has become capital intensive. This means you need enough money to get started and keep running due to high inflation.

If you have enough money to fund your business at the moment, believe me, you’ll have a good share of the market and stand a good competitive place.

KNOWLEDGE OF THE BUSINESS

  • Over 90% of Nigerian agopreneurs especially those in the poultry farming sector try to escape this aspect of the startup plan.

Yes, I see a majority of poultry farmers makes this mistake all the time.

Only in Nigeria you see a farmer who claims to be building a million Naira business basing their business success on absolute zero knowledge. No knowledge of the business at all.

It scares me when I see farmers on media managing over 500 birds yet have no knowledge of the commonest poultry diseases. Isn’t that a wonder?

The success of every business is based on how much of the business you know.

    For example,
Many farmers get into the business because their Neighbors kept 50 birds and made a profit of 100 thousand Naira. They don’t care what’s involved, they just want to make the same profit, too.

Many layers farmers I’ve had some conversations with could not hide their regrets but expressed painfully how they’ve spent all their capital raising their pullets yet haven’t started laying eggs.

They were only motivated by the number of crates of eggs they saw their neighbors picked from their layers coop every day.

Before starting a poultry farm, you need to:

Know which part of the production line is more profitable (meat or egg production)

Understand which part of the production line is more capital intensive (Broilers Production or layers production)?

Know which of the production lines guarantees quicker returns on investment

Which part is easier to manage

    Understand the available markets

Do your market research based on your location

Understand the value of chicken products in your available market

    And more.

Now you see you can’t do without a mentor? Someone to hold you by the hand and walk you through the journey to success. If you jump into this ocean of unknown depth, you may be forced to jump out or drown.

PASSION

However good you are, you’ll be faced with different challenges along the way to success. Passion is the fuel you’ll need to keep going, irrespective of the challenges you may face.
