Farmers are often skeptical what happens to the Newcastle infected birds. Is it eatable after slaughter?
The simple answer is, yes.
The Newcastle disease is not a communicable disease of humans. It only affect livestock. However, care must be taken before consuming the Newcastle infected birds.
The infection do not in anyway make the birds unsafe for human consumption. But, because of the antibiotics used for treatment it is advised not to consume them.
Most of the antibiotics used in poultry has labeled withdrawal periods. Within this period, the chicken products (both eggs and meat) are considered unsafe for human consumption because of the residues in the products.
Withdrawal period is the time required to assure that the meat or egg products from chickens are safe for consumption after administering a particular medication. Farmers are advised to observe the withdrawal period on the labels of particular antibiotics used in poultry production because of the residues of these drugs in the poultry products.
Practically, farmers are always afraid to eat the meat products of their infected birds. Majority of farmers do not eat what they produce because of the awareness of these medications used which aren’t safe for humans.
It is also not advisable to sell these meat products to the public. This is one of the reasons imported chickens are banned or advised not safe for consumption.
As a farmer, assuming you had an outbreak in your farm and you’ve been using synthetic antibiotics to effect a cure, would you confidently consume such meat?
I guess your answer is no.
Back to our question. Is a chicken infected with Newcastle disease safe for consumption when slaughtered? Yes.
But if you’ve been using synthetic drugs to effect a cure, the meat is definitely not safe for consumption.
To say the fact, majority of the meat products of poultry are simply not 100% safe for human consumption considering the synthetic antibiotics used in production.
A better alternative?
Go organic. Embrace the healing power of nature.
Organic medications are considered safe without any withdrawal period indications. In fact, it is best to have your birds on organic medications up to the day of slaughter so you can have enough of the organic residues in the meat product which are considered 100% safe and healthy for humans.
